Animation / Storytelling

When the Peabody Essex Museum was creating the new exhibition for their asian arts display, they wanted to address the sensitive nature of how many of those objects came to the US, through the Opium Trade. We were tasked with creating a visual media piece that addressed the topic directly, as well as draw connections to the current opioid crisis our country has seen.

Beautiful style

One of the early conceptual ideas was to create a scene that felt a bit murky and ink-washed, and that evolved to a visual style for the entire piece that embraced this ink-wash presentation. Not only does the bleeding ink draw us in and lead us around, but allows for elegant transitions between scenes, utilizing old engraved illustrations, and more poignantly, switch to a blood-like red during key moments in the narrative.

3D Integration

While much of the animation was created using 2D techniques, some key moments required an approach that created more visual depth, both literally and figuratively. To contrast the inky style of the primary narration, the Poppy flower was created in Cinema 4D and textured with a subtle water-color effect to mix the 2D & 3D approach. This gives the poppy flower sequence both modern and historical context that is relevant to the story.

We may not have the power to change history, but we can use it to better shape our future.
