Van Gogh’s Bedroom
Animation
Experiential Design
Van Gogh’s Bedroom was a temporary exhibit at the Art Institute in Chicago, pulling in 4,000 visitors per day. I created three large scale projections, two that are synced. The feature projection replicated one side of Van Gogh’s bedroom, as depicted in his paintings, while crafting a compelling narrative using Van Gogh’s own words. I wanted to establish an animation style that felt reflective of Van Gogh’s own style, as though we are watching him create the scenes himself.

The Bedroom
One of the visual highlights of this exhibit (aside from Van Gogh’s actual paintings of course), is the blueprint life size mockup of the yellow house bedroom. With this piece we wanted the wall of that bedroom as seen in the paintings to change and evolve while telling Van Gogh’s story in his own words.
A second projected area oscillates between both walls to capture different parts of the narrative, illustrating Van Gogh’s paintings and sketches, and giving a glimpse into his process.
Yellow House
A third animated projection tells the story of the yellow house itself, allowing Van Gogh’s handwritten words and sketches be transformed with translations and visual motion.
This emotional experience sets the tone for the visitors' first encounter with the three paintings.
